Who We Are

Our History

Southeast Bronx Neighborhood Centers, Inc. is a not-for-profit multiservice agency, whose mission statement is to plan, develop, and provide services that enhance the quality of life and facilitate empowerment of the constituents of the Southeast Bronx.

SEBNC evolved from the Council House, a project of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) in the 1930’s.

During the 1940’s the population in the Southeast Bronx shifted to a predominantly African American constituency.

At that juncture, the NCJW invited a group of leaders to assume responsibility for what was then called Forest Neighborhood Houses.

In March 1971, the Forest Neighborhood Board of Directors reorganized and reincorporated as Southeast Bronx Neighborhood Centers.

Introduction

Children are provided early childhood education through programs, such as Head Start, where they are able to have educational experiences and activities that promote their cognitive, emotional, and physical development.

Our teachers and their assistants are highly trained and we hold the highest standards of care for children in our programs.

We also believe in providing feedback and support to parents to aid in the overall development of their children.

Our support services include a Mental Health Consultant who conducts observations to determine effective strategies and resources for special needs children. We have a case management approach and services are designed to minimize disruption in the flow of the daily schedule. Each child has an individualized education plan in order to reach their full potential.
