Summary
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of DD Services, the Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritionally balanced meals for developmentally disabled individuals.
This person will maintain high standards of quality food production and portion control; as well as ensure appropriate quantities of food needed to meet menu requirements are in stock.
H/she will also ensure the kitchen and related equipment are appropriately maintained in excellent sanitary condition.
Duties And Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities of the Cook are, but may not be limited to:
- Planning, preparing and serving attractive and nutritionally balanced meals; promoting and reinforcing good nutritional habits, portion control and a balanced diet.
- Prepares weekly menus and works with staff to determine number of meals required before food preparation of each meal.
- Create and/or maintain Production Worksheets to plan appropriate amounts of ingredients needed to prepare menu items.
- Keeping kitchen equipment and utensils in good working condition, using proper washing and cleaning methods.
- Ensure that all dining tables, chairs, kitchen and cooking related areas are clean and in good working order at all times.
- Create and maintain an inventory of food and kitchen supplies; and works with the coordinator to make weekly/monthly food orders.
- Responsible for proper storage of food and kitchen supplies in accordance with US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), NY State and City regulations.
- Ensures everyone working in the kitchen is wearing proper attire (i.e., apron, hair net, gloves, etc.) during food handling.
- Ensure that all kitchen garbage is placed in designated receptacles.
- Perform related duties as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma/GED with 2 years of large quantity food preparation experience is required.
- Food Handler, Bloodborne Pathogens and First Aid/CPR certificates are required.
- Knowledge of recipe development and general nutrition; as well as knowledge of basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, division & multiplication) are required.
- Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and web browsers effectively is required.
- Good verbal and written communication skills; as well as strong time management, organizational and interpersonal skills. Must have ability to be flexible and multi-task.
- School lunch experience preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
Physical Abilities
Ability to see at normal distance, hear normal conversations and sounds. Physical ability to bend, squat, sit on floor, climb stairs, skip and run.
Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular paper and use computer keyboard and other office machines/equipment.
