Registered Nurse

Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the health care services provided to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in an Office for People with Development Disabilities (OPWDD)-certified Day Habilitation Program. 

The RN ensures that SEBNC’s DD individuals receive appropriate health monitoring, medication administration oversight, and preventive care in accordance with OPWDD regulations, agency policies and nursing standards of practice. 

Duties And Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities of the Registered Nurse are, but may not be limited to:

  • Monitor and assess the ongoing health needs of individuals attending the Day Habilitation program.
  • Conduct routine nursing assessments and document findings in compliance with OPWDD regulations.
  • Identify health care needs and ensure timely referrals and follow-ups with external health providers
  • Oversee medication administration by trained staff in accordance with New York State (NYS) Medication Administration Certification Program (AMAP)
  • Train, evaluate and re-certify AMAP staff as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date Medication Administration Records (MARs).
  • Reconcile medications and ensure proper storage, labeling, and security of all medications.
  • Provide ongoing training to Day Habilitation staff on health-related topics such as infection control, seizure management, diabetes care, first aid, and other diagnoses-specific interventions.
  • Educate individuals and caregivers on health conditions and wellness strategies.
  • Maintain current and thorough nursing notes, medical records and other required documentation.
  • Prepare for and participate in audits and surveys conducted by OPWDD and other oversight agencies.
  • Ensure the program operates in compliance with OPWDD Part 635 regulations; as well as other relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with Program Managers/Directors, Behavior Specialists, Direct Support Professionals and other team members to support person-centered care.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a current NYS Registered Nurse license in good standing.  CPR and First Aid certifications are required.

2-3 years of nursing experience with at least 1 year of work experience providing services to intellectual & developmentally disabled adults.

Must have a keen sense of observation.  Must be dependable and punctual; as well as have excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing skills, and a strong sense of teamwork.

NYS Driver’s License preferred.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

Physical Abilities

Ability to see at normal distance, hear normal conversations and sounds. Physical ability to bend, squat, sit on floor, climb stairs, skip and run. 

Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular paper and use computer keyboard and other office machines/equipment.  Ability to safely and occasionally lift up to 50lbs., when needed.

Other Requirements

Must submit to job-pertinent examinations including tuberculosis test and criminal record background checks. Employment is conditional pending satisfactory results of required tests, etc.

Salary Range & Benefits:
